Formento & Formento American/British b. 1964 & 1975 Husband and wife duo BJ and Richeille Formento create cinematic, quasi-anthropological photographs. The couple began collaborating in 2005, uniting Richeille’s background as a fashion designer and art director with BJ’s experience in fashion and street photography. Their photographs span diverse topics—from the town of Gary, Indiana, to geishas in Japan—exploring the cultural and aesthetic implications of place through saturated colors and staged environments. The couple’s transition away from fashion photography resulted from an impulse to document certain characteristics of different cultures. “We wanted to capture the peculiarity, even idiosyncrasy, of Japanese culture before it is diluted beyond recognition through the influence of modernity,” Richeille has said about their work in Japan.
